Obstacles Found in Travel Crush
This is a two-part series of the items you’ll have to deal with as you go through each city. This first guide will be the items that block your way, while Obstacles in Travel Crush Part 2 lists all the visitors you will encounter.
Blockers
Obstacles are found in every level of Travel Crush. They will try to prevent you from breaking tiles and completing your Goal. Whether they stay still or move around, you’ll have to figure out how to deal with them to complete every level.
Stationary Obstacles
Here is a list of Blockers that will stay on the tile until it is completely removed. Some of them need to be hit once but others need multiple actions to break them completely.
Bricks with Dynamite
Pay attention to the Dynamite taped onto the Bricks. They will give you clues to figure out how to remove them, such as colored tape or an icon of the item that you need to collect to ignite the Dynamite. The number indicates how many of those items you need. Simple!
When the number reaches 0, then it’s BOOM goes the Dynamite!
Chains
Chained tiles aren’t going anywhere until you break them free. You’ll have to match the Chained tiles or hit them with a Power-up to destroy the Chains (and the tile). With that said, you can use a Bolt to hit one color of tile that is Chained.
Double Chains
The same concept as Chains, but you’ll have to hit them 2 times to break the Chains. You can’t make Power-ups with Double Chained tiles, but you can still break them in those patterns.
Locked Chains
Just in case putting 2 Chains on a tile wasn’t enough, they put a LOCK on them, too! The Locked Chained tiles need to be hit 3 times to break them. All of the above details for Chains and Double Chains apply to Locked Chains. Break free your inner Houdini to free the tiles from their Chains!
Crates
Crates are simple, match near them or hit tiles nearby with a Power-up to break these wooden boxes. Oftentimes, breaking Crates won’t be a part of your Goal so pay attention to what each level requires to be completed, and don’t waste your time unless they are in your way.
HINT: Crates can have Grass hidden underneath, so you may need to break them to get to the Grass, so if that is your goal you’ll have to be extra diligent in removing them.
Bolted Crates
A Crate with one slab of wood across it is Bolted once and is destroyed just like Crates with the exception that you have to hit them 2 times.
Double Bolted Crates
A Crate with 2 slabs of wood is the Bolted Crate’s big brother and you’ll have to hit them 3 times to break them off the board.
Grass
One of the easiest obstacles to remove in this game, you need only make a match on top or hit it with a Power-up to mow it down. Regular Grass is light green and can hide under other obstacles! The trickiest Grass to remove is in smaller corners of the board since you have to break tiles on top of it to remove instead of just nearby.
Thick Grass
Dark green Thick Grass has the same requirements as Grass, but you’ll have to hit it 2 times to mow it down.
Ice
Tiles hidden inside Ice can be freed by matching with the frozen tiles underneath, matching nearby them, or hitting them with Power-ups. Bolts can be used to help free tiles of the same color as it is swapped with.
Extra Frozen Ice
A double layer of Ice covers tiles that need to be hit twice before becoming free.
Ivy
Ivy looks innocuous but it has secrets hidden underneath. First, match near Ivy or hit them with a Rocket, Bomb, or Combo to remove it. Then, you’ll see what’s hidden underneath, which could be just about anything, including tiles or other obstacles.
HINT: You’ll get a sneak peek of what’s under Ivy when the level first starts.
One of the tips in the 10 Tips Guide says to start at the bottom, but to watch out for Portals! Level 157 is a prime example of Portals messing with the natural flow of tiles down the board. The “bottom” of the level is actually in the middle of the screen, but you’re going to have to clear out the Crates to work on that part of the board.
Moveable Obstacles
These can be swapped with a tile to make a match on the board. They will also fall if a space underneath them is cleared. The best way to take care of these Blockers is to break them when they are in a group, so don’t disturb them too much!
Balloons
Where’s the party? The festive Balloons are one of the easiest obstacles in Travel Crush. To remove them from the board all you have to do is match near them or break nearby tiles with any Power-up or Combo.
Pinata
Festive-colored Pinatas can only be removed by using a Bomb, Rocket, or a Combo Power-up. Luckily, they usually gather in groups to make them easy pickings. They also make a cute party horn noise as they are removed from the board.
Ticking Bomb
These timed Ticking Bombs are a hazard to be dealt with ASAP! They are one of the most dangerous Obstacles you will face in Travel Crush because when time’s up *BOOM*! Then you’ve lost the level and have to start over.
Luckily, they are pretty simple to defeat since you can treat them like any other color tile on the board. You can destroy them by either matching the same color tiles with them or defeat them with a Power-up.
TIP: Some Ticking Bombs can only be destroyed with Power-ups, so keep a close watch for them, so you can craft a Power-up and break the Ticking Bomb.
Vase
There is a treasure hiding within Vases, which is a lot better than finding a bunch of dirt! Break Vases by matching nearby or using Power-ups, then pick up the Money Bags that drop.
Money Bags
From the broken Vases, you’ll find bags of money left behind. Collect them by matching nearby or using Power-ups to grab up all the riches.
Watermelon
Want a slice of Watermelon? These fruits have 3 stages which determine how many times they need to be hit to clear them from the board.
- Full Watermelon: needs to be hit 3 times
- Three-quarters: hit these 2 times
- Half: 1 more hit
Removing these is easy since they can be swapped with tiles, so matching in the middle of a bunch of Balloons will remove twice as many!
Other Obstacles
These don’t fit in the other categories, since they’re either self-moving or aren’t ON a tile, but they each have their trickiness to get used to.
Portals
Color-coded Portals link two spaces on the board together. Tiles will fall from one Portal to the other Portal of the same color as you break tiles from underneath.
PRO-TIP: In the Tips to Travel Crush Guide, it’s recommended that you start breaking tiles from the bottom of the board, and Portals can make this tricky since the bottom of the board could technically be in the middle of the screen due to Portals pulling tiles from other places!
Sand
Quick! It’s Sand! If you don’t hurry up to remove all the Sand at a level it will grow and cover everything. Each move that doesn’t clear any Sand will produce more sand nearby, so work quickly before it overtakes the whole board.
Tornado
Sound the sirens, there’s a twister coming! Tornadoes will tear up a spot on the board with every move you make. Even though the ‘broken’ spaces will go away on the next move, it could mess with any moves you’re planning on making. There’s no way to remove a Tornado from the board and the only thing you can do is take cover.
Walls
As unassuming as they may look, the yellow lines that split the board into spaces are pretty annoying. You can’t move tiles across them and tiles won’t drop through them unless they have Portals to direct them somewhere else. Although you can still make matches through the walls and Power-ups or Combos will still flow through.
Even More Obstacles?
Check out the Obstacles in Travel Crush Guide Part 2 to meet the cunning critters that will do whatever it takes to stop you from reaching your goals at each level. From friendly Skunks to mischievous Monkeys, there’s more than just bricks and walls to deal with.
Blocker Tricks
- A Bolt can be moved between any obstacle that can be swapped with no effects. It does cost you a move each time, however, so keep that in mind if you need to move the Bolt a long distance.
- The best way to remove obstacles that have multiple layers like Thick Grass or Bolted Crates is to use a Bomb since they are activated twice. For multiple obstacles like this, a Bolt and a Bomb are the bomb-diggity!
- Any movable obstacles are easier to remove if they’re kept in a group, so work on those first before their formation is ruined.
- Clear obstacles in blocked spots or tight corners by using Rockets or Rocket Combos.

What’s Your Strategy?
No matter if you study the board intensely before starting or just make matches willy-nilly, the most important thing to do is to focus on the obstacles at hand. Knowing how to deal with each one is key to defeating each level and moving through all the wonderful cities in the world. Hopefully, you learned a few tricks on how to handle each blocker on the board.
